India’s Ayodhya temple will be inaugurated on January 22, 2024, with a ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has made its construction a key election campaign pledge. But critics have come to see the divisive temple as a symbol of rising Hindu nationalism in the country. Ayodhya was built on a site where a mosque once stood before it was razed by Hindu zealots over three decades ago.
