William Lai Ching-te of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) took the lead early in the vote count and held on to it, keeping opposition Kuomintang and Taiwan People’s Party candidates at bay. The results of the poll are expected to impact relations across the Taiwan Strait and between Beijing and Washington.
