Turkey’s election chief declared the incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan winner of the run-off presidential election on May 28, 2023, extending his increasingly authoritarian rule into a third decade. Erdogan’s victory came despite rampant inflation in the country, which is still recovering from the deadly February earthquake that levelled entire cities.
