Taiwan reported 267 domestic Covid-19 cases on May 19, 2021. The new infections bring the number of locally transmitted cases to 1,291. All are from the previous nine days. Before this latest outbreak, there had been only 95 locally transmitted cases in total since the beginning of the pandemic. The self-governed island has raised its alert to level three, the second highest warning in a four-tier system. Taiwan has also mobilised soldiers to disinfect Taipei’s main subway station and has called for easier access to vaccines to cope with a shortage.
