Toxic fumes belching from the Suralaya coal plant on the Indonesian island of Java have been polluting a nearby village and threatening the country’s climate goals. As part of Indonesia’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2060, Jakarta has promised to halt construction of new coal-fired plants from 2023. The Suralaya coal plant, however, is already undergoing a US$3.5 billion expansion project to boost its capacity.
