Nearly 2,000 people were forced to evacuate as Indonesia’s Semeru volcano erupted on December 4, 2022. The eruption in the east of Java island happened about one year after Semeru last roared to life. Authorities have raised their highest-level warning, but as of early December 5 no casualties or disruptions to air travel were reported.
