China will open an additional 3,300km (2,050 miles) of railway lines in 2022 as the country continues to expand its freight and passenger rail networks. The new lines are seen as critical components of the Belt and Road Initiative and an alternative to diplomatically tense shipping lanes that are prone to delays and bottlenecks.
