Eileen Feng Gu, also known as Gu Ailing, is China’s biggest hope for a medal haul at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. The US-born freestyle skier opted to represent China over Team USA when she turned 15, choosing to represent the home country of her mother, who immigrated to the United States. However, some are now questioning the 18-year-old’s “true nationality”. While the Olympic charter allows for athletes to hold multiple nationalities, Chinese law does not recognise dual citizenship. Gu is yet to clarify if she renounced her US citizenship since deciding to represent China at the Beijing Games.
