On October 14, 2021, five North Korean defectors living in Japan called on Kim Jong-un to appear before a Tokyo district court in a lawsuit over a 1959 Korean repatriation programme they liken to kidnapping. More than 90,000 ethnic Koreans, and their Japanese wives, were repatriated to North Korea as part of a Pyongyang-funded programme to replace workers lost during the Korean War. They were enticed with promises of “paradise on Earth” only to be forced into manual labour camps upon their return to North Korea. Five ethnic Koreans who defected back to Japan are now seeking 100 million yen (US$880,000) each in damages.
