Shanghai’s 2023 Halloween celebration became an internet sensation as revellers adopted the Western festival and gave it a Chinese twist. The October 31 celebrations included people dressing up in traditional Chinese costumes while others came up with contemporary themes that were lighthearted, provocative or even satirical. It was the first Halloween since China dropped zero-Covid restrictions that were among the most strict and long-lasting in the world.
