Japan’s premium Shine Muscat grape variety took 33 years to develop. It now faces imitation challenges from China and South Korea. The seeds were allegedly taken out of Japan, leading to cheaper copycats on shelves elsewhere. Despite setbacks, Japan’s rich history of fruit development, including popular Fuji apples, continues with ongoing work on new pear varieties.
