A growing number of Chinese migrants have been trying to reach the US via a relatively new and hazardous route in Central America that has been publicised on social media. They first fly to Ecuador, which does not require visas for Chinese nationals. Then they head north through Panama’s Darien Gap jungle to reach the US-Mexico border. They then turn themselves in to US authorities to lodge their asylum claims. According to Panamanian authorities, Chinese citizens were the fourth-largest group crossing the Darien Gap during the first nine months of 2023.
