Southeast Asia’s longest waterway, the Mekong River, is under threat from development, according to a report by more than two dozen global conservation groups. The research published on March 4, 2024, said WWF and 25 other marine and wildlife conservation organisations found that 20 per cent of the fish species living in the Mekong are in danger of going extinct because of unsustainable development. The study said the biggest culprit was the construction of hydropower dams, which fragment the flow of the river and its tributaries.
