China puts pressure on Taiwan ahead of election | BBC News

The Taiwanese government has accused China of mounting a huge misinformation campaign to try and influence the outcome of the island’s presidential election in a little over two weeks’ time.

Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is attempting to win an unprecedented third consecutive term.

China sees self-ruled Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be under Beijing’s control.

The DPP’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates have both been banned from traveling to China or Hong Kong.
