Canada trucker protests prompt state of emergency – BBC News

A state of emergency has been declared in Canada’s capital city, Ottawa, in response to more than a week of truckers’ protests against Covid restrictions.

The protests followed a vaccine mandate implemented by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government earlier this month for truckers crossing the US-Canada border.

The mayor of Canada’s capital Jim Watson said the city was “losing this battle” and “completely out of control”.

The Freedom Convoy protest, which has spread to other cities, has now morphed into broader challenges to Covid health restrictions.
