As lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano reaches residential areas, some 6,000 people have been forced to flee their homes on La Palma, part of Spain’s Canary Islands. More than 180 homes have been destroyed since the eruption began on September 19, 2021. Authorities also fear that lava flowing into the sea may trigger explosions and clouds of toxic gas.
