More than 200,000 Afghan refugees have returned to Afghanistan since a November 1, 2023 deadline passed, according to Pakistani border officials. The ultimatum affects an estimated 1.7 million undocumented migrants who had been living in Pakistan, many of whom fled the country after the Taliban resumed power in 2021. The Taliban government said the majority of returnees have been forcibly repatriated in “very poor condition”.
