WHO chief calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza, aid delivery

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus spoke at a Geneva news conference on Thursday about global health issues. Tedros urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to facilitate food and medical aid delivery, emphasizing that air and sea deliveries were insufficient to meet growing needs. He stressed the necessity of expanding land crossings for large-scale aid delivery to prevent famine. Additionally, Tedros mentioned the WHO’s support for establishing nutrition stabilization centres in Gaza to treat children with severe acute malnutrition. He highlighted the challenges posed by ongoing fighting around hospitals, including al-Shifa, which hindered the distribution of supplies. Tedros reiterated the call for Israel to open more crossings, accelerate aid delivery, protect medical facilities, refrain from militarizing them, release hostages, and implement an immediate ceasefire.
