Hongkongers will head to the polls on December 19, 2021, to cast ballots in the first Legislative Council election since the central government in mainland China revamped the city’s electoral system earlier in the year. The SCMP recently spoke with two of the 153 candidates running for Legco seats, including veteran pro-establishment lawmaker Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee and Adrian Lau Cheuk-yu. Lau is one of only three hopefuls who refer to themselves as “pro-democracy” in their manifestos and standing on election platforms calling for universal suffrage.
