North Korea has stayed silent regarding the fate of a US soldier who crossed into the country from the South on July 18, 2023, through the heavily fortified border known as the demilitarised zone. Army private Travis King is the first American known to be held by Pyongyang in nearly five years. Officials at the US Pentagon said they have “reached out” to their North Korean counterparts, but have had no response.
