Meenakshi Amma, a 78-year-old granny, has been practising kalari, a 3,000-year-old traditional martial art, since she was seven years old. Once banned in 1804 under British colonial rule in India, the sport managed to survive underground and was later revitalised in the early 20th century and after independence in 1947. Now, the great-grandmother continues to promote the sport, encouraging more girls to learn it to protect themselves and boost their self confidence.
