China has stepped up efforts to transition to clean energy and become carbon neutral by 2060. But in 2022, coal-fired power plants still accounted for nearly 60 per cent of the country’s total power generation. Most of the nation’s coal comes from underground mines, where there have been frequent gas explosions and other accidents in recent decades. The government has been pushing the development of intelligent coal mines in recent years as a way to reduce fatal accidents. In April 2021, tech giant Huawei formed a “coal mine army” to focus on building intelligent systems to help coal mines cut the number of workers that need to be underground and improve safety.
