Wildfires fanned by winds from the distant Hurricane Dora tore through Hawaii’s Maui island on August 8, 2023, killing at least six people and injuring dozens of others. Some panicked residents jumped into the Pacific Ocean to escape the smoke and flames as dozens of homes and businesses were burnt down to the ground in areas including the historic tourist town of Lahaina. Thousands of tourists and locals have been forced to evacuate.
