Going into a Covid-19 isolation centre is non-negotiable for Hong Kong residents if they’re asked to do so, the city’s Security Secretary, Chris Tang, said on March 10, 2022. “If they refuse to go, they can be fined HK$5,000 (US$639) or given up to 2 months in jail,” Tang said. His comments come amid concerns about conditions in the government-run facilities for people who test positive for Covid-19 and their close contacts. Isolation is a key part of the government’s strategy for stopping the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant, which has torn through the city since late December and infected more than 600,000 residents.
