South Korea’s parliament passed a bill on January 9, 2024, banning the breeding, slaughtering and selling of dogs for their meat. Despite declining dog meat consumption and pressure from activists, the law faces opposition from dog farmers and customers. Choi Tae-yeon’s restaurant, which was established at the height of South Korea’s dog meat industry boom, now faces closure because of the law.
