For a century, deadly fires have raged in the mines of Jharkhand state in eastern India. Hundreds of thousands of people have endangered their lives by shovelling coal to supply an insatiable demand for the fuel. The area is in various areas of opencast mines that cover an area of almost 300 square kilometres (116 square miles), responsible for the combustion of millions of tonnes of coal that emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
