US President Joe Biden says his administration is working towards what he calls a “sustained calm” between Israel and Palestine.
He stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire despite demands from 28 senators from his Democratic Party.
Speaking a short while ago, the US secretary of state reiterated Washington’s stance that Israel has a “right to defend itself”.
But Antony Blinken called on both sides to do more to de-escalate the situation and respect international law.
