Cyclone Tauktae has weakened after battering the western coast of India, hitting Gujarat and nearby states since the weekend. Mumbai had been badly affected by strong winds and intense rain. The cyclone is the strongest to strike the region since 1998. It has killed at least 12 people, with more than 200,000 evacuated. India’s response to its devastating Covid-19 outbreak was also badly disrupted by the cyclone, with patients hastily moved away from coastal areas to inland hospitals.
