U.S. president-elect Joe Biden on Monday spoke after the Electoral College cast their votes, giving he and vice-presaident-elect Kamala Harris 306 electoral votes compared to Donald Trump’s 232, saying that neither a pandemic nor an “abuse of power” can extinguish the “flame” of democracy.
He praised public servants and election officials to ensure the vote was conducted fairly and said they would not allow themselves “to be bullied” or let threats of violence intimidate them.
Biden also commended the judicial system after numerous judges dismissed cases brought by President Donald Trump’s campaign and other allies in an attempt to overturn the election results.
He said the Texas-led case before the Supreme Court, that saw more than a dozen state attorneys general join in the case, was “stunning” but said the justices sent a signal that “they would be no part of an unprecedented assault on our democracy.”
