Student hijab row protests spread across India – BBC News

High schools and colleges have been shut in the Indian state of Karnataka, after a row over Muslim women wearing headscarves in the classroom.

Protests have now spread across the country, to two of India’s largest cities, Kolkata and Chennai.

On Wednesday, a judge at the state’s high court referred petitions challenging the ban to a larger panel.

The BBC’s Ros Atkins explains the latest developments.
