The population of Mumbai, also known as India’s ‘Maximum City’, grew by some eight million people, roughly equivalent to the size of New York City, in the last 30 years. But Mumbai’s housing, transport, water and waste management infrastructure have not kept pace, with around 40 per cent of the city’s 20 million living in slums. These crowded collections of ramshackle buildings often have no regular supply of water and power or proper sanitation.
