In Depth: Rajya Sabha Biennial Election 2020

The Election Commission of India on Tuesday announced the schedule for biennial elections to Rajya Sabha for the seats that are going to fall vacant in April.
The term of office of 55 members of the Rajya Sabha elected from 17 States is due to expire on their retirement in April, 2020.
According to Article 80 of the Constitution , the maximum strength of Rajya Sabha is laid down to be 250, out of which 238 are representatives of the States and Union Territories, while 12 members are nominated by the President .
Rajya Sabha, at present, has 245 seats. Of these, 233 members represent the States and the Union Territories
The notification for the Rajya Sabha elections will be issued on March 6th. The last date for filing of nominations is March 13th
