Germany elections: What happened, and what happens next?

Olaf Scholtz has no doubt about who should lead Germany forward after his party emerged on top in the latest elections.
Nevertheless, the SPD will have to negotiate with smaller parties, such as the Greens and Free Democrats, before it can form a government.
The CDU/CSU is waiting in the wings, despite having suffered one of its worst electoral defeats, insisting it can govern if the SPD cannot form an alliance.
