France riots ease as mayors hold anti-violence rally – BBC News

People have been gathering outside town halls across France to call for calm after almost a week of rioting.

On Monday, crowds gathered in solidarity with one of the mayors of a Paris suburb whose wife and children were forced to flee after a burning vehicle was sent towards their house on Saturday night.

The violent protests have been in response to the shooting of teenager Nahel M during a police traffic stop.

It was relatively calmer on the streets of France on Sunday night with about 150 arrests compared with 700 the night before.
