International economic sanctions imposed since the Taliban resumed power in Afghanistan in August 2021 have left the country on the brink of collapse. Widespread poverty is forcing an increasing number of desperate Afghans to turn to selling their kidneys to survive, with many unaware of the dangers of living with only one kidney.
