Twelfth-graders at 10 high schools in the far-eastern Indonesian city of Kupang now need to start classes at 5.30am every day. Authorities said the pilot project, announced in February 2023, is intended to strengthen students’ discipline by getting the day off to an earlier start. But parents have complained, saying that their sleep-deprived children are being forced to get up before dawn and travel in the dark to school.
