Afghanistan’s capital has a bold new landmark that depicts the nation as being at the centre of the world as it places the world at the centre of Kabul. The giant hand-painted globe in Dahan-e-bagh Square features an oversized Afghanistan that designers said was meant to counter a sense of oppression in the country. But critics noted that Afghanistan was painted to resemble the flag of the Taliban, the movement that has imposed a hardline interpretation of Islamic law since it regained control of the country in August 2021.
