President Trump and members of the coronavirus task force give reporters a briefing at the White House. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced that the IRS would defer $300 billion worth of tax payments for Americans and businesses in the midst of the coronavirus fallout. Mnuchin urged Americans who can afford it to still file their taxes by April 15, but he said that anyone who owes money to the IRS can defer that payment, interest-free, for 90 days, up to $1 million for individuals and up to $10 million for corporations.
Health departments in the United States on Monday reported the largest number of coronavirus-related deaths on any one day since the onset of the outbreak: 22, bringing the nationwide total to 89. Calls have intensified for social distancing as one of the only measures that could prevent the United States from facing a situation as dire as Italy’s, where thousands of people have been killed by the coronavirus.
