A video of a 90-year-old hawker pleading with hygiene officers, after they confiscated the cart she used to sell roasted chestnuts, has gone viral in the city. The incident happened on the evening of March 6, 2023. The licensed hawker initially said she had left her stall with her partner, who is unlicensed, to use the toilet and returned to find the cart surrounded by officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. Two days later, she told the Post she had gone home after using the washroom and was called back to the stall by her partner. Hygiene officers seized the chestnut stall for illegal hawking. The elderly vendor pleaded with the officers, who then called backup from the police. A video taken by a Post reporter shows the woman pleading with officers, saying she had relied on selling roasted chestnuts to make a living, for decades.
