US forces quietly completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan’s Bagram Airfield on July 2, 2021, without notifying the base’s new Afghan commander. The military complex was America’s biggest airbase in the country and had been central to the war against the Taliban insurgency. The Afghan army only discovered the US departure more than two hours after they had left the base. A small army of looters converged on the site, rummaging through storage containers before being evicted.
