The US is in the grip of a fourth wave of coronavirus infections, driven by the highly contagious Delta variant that has grown over summer 2021. The death toll as of early September was more than 1,100 a day on average, turning the clock back to what the nation was experiencing in mid-March. The nation’s most closely watched forecasting model from the University of Washington, projected an additional 98,000 Americans will die by the start of December. On September 9, US President Joe Biden sharply criticised Americans who are not yet vaccinated, saying they are contributing to the sharp rise in cases and deaths. In an all-out effort to increase vaccination rate, Biden also announced new requirements for all federal employees to get vaccinated and for businesses with more than 100 employees to mandate that their workers be vaccinated or tested weekly.
