The US has applied for 18 officials to attend the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, despite announcing a diplomatic boycott earlier in December 2021. The US says the applicants are not official representatives, but rather security and consular staff. Beijing has called Washington’s boycott a “farce,” but said it would process the visas according to the “principle of reciprocity”.
