With Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch of the Washington Nationals home opener against the New York Yankees, President Donald Trump hosted Yankees’ pitching legend Mariano Rivera at the White House Thursday.
Trump is a golfer, but a big baseball fan as well, and the two men played pitch and catch on the South Lawn of the White House while a number of school-age baseball players from different teams did the same.
“It’s an honor to have you at the White House as you’re my friend and a very special person, great athlete,” the president said.
When asked by a reporter if he was concerned that Juan Soto, an outfielder for the Nationals, has tested positive for COVID-19, Trump said the Nationals would be able to handle it.
During Trump’s daily briefing on the coronavirus, he told reporters that Yankees’ President Randy Levine had invited him to throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium on August 15th.
“I’ve agreed,” the president said.
Many U.S. colleges have announced they’re scaling back, or eliminating, their fall sports schedules due to the outbreak, Trump applauded professional sports Leagues for resuming play.
“It’s a tremendous thing psychologically for our country,” Trump said.
