Spectators gathered on September 26, 2021, on La Palma to watch the ongoing volcano eruption in Spain’s Canary Islands. Lava flowing from the Cumbre Vieja volcano has destroyed more than 500 buildings and forced about 6,000 people to evacuate. A day after the eruption began on September 19, Spain’s tourism minister Reyes Maroto drew criticism for suggesting it could be an “attraction” for visitors.
