Hikers exploring Hong Kong’s nature trails can often find herds of feral cows and buffaloes roaming the countryside. Some of the animals can get very close to humans, wandering into private property and foraging at neighbourhood rubbish bins. The cattle, comprising brown cattle and water buffaloes, were left behind as farms were abandoned in the 1970s.

For more than 15 years, members of the Lantau Buffalo Association have been trying to protect the herds by feeding cattle living on Lantau Island as well as in Sai Kung and Tap Mun in the northern New Territories. The group’s chairwoman Ho Loy describes their work as a mission to balance human development with preserving nature and the buffaloes’ “natural environment”.
