The last ‘sworn virgins’ of Albania – BBC News

The Balkan ‘burrnesha’ tradition is a centuries old practice in which women swear an oath of celibacy and choose to live their lives as men.

These women are known as the burrneshat, or ‘sworn virgins’.

The practice historically allowed women to shed their traditional gender role, to enjoy many of the same freedoms as men, in return for their chastity.

Today, only a handful of sworn virgins are left in the world.
