Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen arrived in New York, making a sensitive US stopover on March 29, 2023, before heading to Guatemala and Belize. The nations are two of a select number of countries that recognise Taiwan diplomatically. On her return journey from Central America, the leader of the self-ruled island is expected to make another US stop in Los Angeles where she is slated to meet US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a move Beijing has vowed to respond to with “resolute countermeasures”.
