Taiwan votes 2020: Indigenous residents could play crucial role in presidential election

Taiwan has just over half a million indigenous residents, making up about 2% of the island’s population. They have traditionally supported the pro-Beijing Kuomintang (KMT). Voter turnout is traditionally low because many feel they are marginalised. In 2016, voter turnout among those between age 20 and 30 was 74%, but it was just 35% among indigenous youth in the same age group. Some activists are hoping to turn that around.
