Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to continue with the country’s year-long war in Ukraine on February 21, 2023, as the invasion neared its first anniversary. He accused the US-led Nato alliance of fanning the flames of the conflict, in the mistaken belief that it could defeat Moscow in a global confrontation. Putin also said he would suspend participation in the last remaining nuclear arms control pact with the US. Hours after Putin’s address, US President Joe Biden reiterated “unwavering” support for Ukraine in a speech in Poland.
