Afghanistan’s last resistance stronghold of Panjshir has turned into a ghost town after the Taliban claimed victory over the province on September 6, 2021. Parts of the rugged valley appear abandoned with only the elderly and livestock remaining in many villages. According to local residents, most villagers fled to Kabul to avoid armed conflict. Several resistance leaders, including Ahmad Massoud, have vowed to never surrender, but it’s unclear what remains of the resistance after the Taliban hoisted its flag in the valley.
